Post-fire Tree Regeneration and Forest Recovery Workshop Summary

The USFS RMRS and CFRI gathered professionals from 27 organizations on April 20, 2021 to discuss issues relating to natural forest recovery and reforestation following the 2020 wildfires in CO and WY. The workshop provided an opportunity for:

  • Local researchers to share highlights of post-fire forest research
  • Managers to discuss practical concerns and considerations about post-fire natural forest regeneration and planting
  • managers, researchers, and stakeholders to discuss knowledge gaps and solutions

In this summary, they outline lessons learned, bring current pressing issues related to post-fire management into context, and outline several barriers to successful post-fire restoration. Research needs are also defined, and highlight several critical areas for understanding post-fire effects in these ecosystems now and in the future as they evolve through time.
