How Wildfire Affects Colorado’s Communities: A case study of the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire

New story map releasing results of a case study about the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire near Durango, CO. A part of a collection of other story maps all about natural disasters in Colorado.

Key findings:

Wildfire costs are large and the total cost is often unknown. Insured losses and fire suppression costs are only a fraction of the true cost of wildfires.

Climate change and population growth are expected to increase future damages from wildfire.

Community planning is essential. Public involvement is necessary for a community to properly plan and prepare for a wildfire.
